Speed the key to several big plays
The Lakewood Vikings offense started the season with a bang, scoring several explosive touchdowns en route to a 38-22 victory over the Hastings Saxons.
Lakewood Senior Noah Caudy got the game started by scoring a 63-yard touchdown run in the first 11 seconds of the game.
That was followed up by another long run by Lakewood sophomore Austin Leazenby. On the next Hastings drive, Leazenby had a big third down tackle on defense to keep the Saxons from getting a first down.
Later on, senior quarterback Kyle Willette busted loose with a 68-yard touchdown run.
The first half ended with a Hastings touchdown run by quarterback Drew Westworth. The Saxons winged-T offense made things difficult for the Vikings front seven, but Hastings didn’t have enough speed for the big runs.
Lakewood junior Josh Campeau scored to start the second half off, and Willette completed a 41-yard touchdown pass for Lakewood. Lane Allen scored on a 10-yard touchdown for Lakewood for the last touchdown of the game.
It was a promising start for Lakewood, who made the playoffs last year for the first time since 2002.
Lakewood travels to Belding next Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
