Gamers, limber up those thumbs for a non-stop 72-hour video game convention starting tomorrow at the Best Western Royal Plaza in Marlborough.
Mixing state-of-the-art games, over $15,000 in prize money and head-banging concerts, "Game UniCon 2009" will be "a very unique convention," predicted organizer Dave Herzog.
"We'll have games in different genres from every era. We'll have 500 TVs for free play. We'll have tournaments with some of the best gamers from around the country," said Herzog, founder and president of Game Universe at 1251 Worcester Road, Rte. 9, in Framingham.
The convention is scheduled to run around-the-clock with games and events from Friday, Aug. 21 through Sunday, Aug. 23.
It doesn't matter whether you're a "noob," or beginner, or an "uber" player, you can sign up for more than 30 tournaments with cash prizes in Halo 3, Street Fighter 4, Soul Calibur IV, Rock Band, Air Hockey, Madden 10, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh and lots more.
Herzog predicted UniCon 2009 will be "the biggest video game convention in the history of New England." He hopes in time "the convention gets big enough to sponsor a player" for national competitions.
Game UniCon 2009 is a joint venture between Herzog's Game Universe and Keough Enterprises.
Passes for the entire convention cost $40 whether visitors attend for one, two or three days. If a player enters a featured tournament, three-day convention passes cost $30. Entry fees for tournaments range from $5 to $25 depending on the game. Entry fees should be paid before a tournament begins.
Herzog suggests pre-registering as early as possible. Pre-registration begins today at 11 a.m. with Friday registration beginning at 6 a.m. The convention's opening ceremonies are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.
While closing ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m., Herzog expects many vendors will remain open until 10 p.m.
What's a video game convention without two concerts featuring Bang Camaro from Madden 10 and Guitar Hero, Freezepop from Rock Band and other groups like Jesus Candy, The Motion Sick and Powerglove. The concerts are scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m.
And if you just need a break from video fatigue, this convention features "Dive In Movies" not Drive-In flicks but the opportunity to jump in a swimming pool and watch cool movies like "Jaws" and "Mortal Kombat." Herzog said he's expecting "tons of famous gamers from around the country" to make the scene, including Justin Wong, regarded as one of the top Street Fight 4 players.
Visitors can browse for new or vintage items from more than 20 vendors including Harrisons Comics and Collectibles, Over the Edge Games, Galaxy 4 Gamers, Jack Links Beef Jerky, Knockouts Haircus for Men and many others.
Herzog said there will be "serious and Comedic" panels including John Radoff from Gamer DNA.
Passes for the convention can be purchased at www.GameUnicom.com. To learn more about Herzog's Game Universe store, visit www.gameuniverseunderground.com.
