Like most Americans I was appalled by the action of the police officer in Minnesota; it was beyond criminal. But the nationwide demonstrations and especially the burning and looting was also wrong.

Here in Monroe a black man shot a white female police officer for no reason. Except he was committing a crime. We didn’t see people wearing or carrying the rebel battle flag (not Confederate) burning the Oaks of Righteousness Church or looting Durocher’s and stealing TVs.

Why was that? Because “thinking” people know Pastor Boone is a good person and had nothing to do with the criminal who shot our police officer. And the shooter doesn’t represent the black community but is the reason officers now must wear bullet resistant vests.

News flash! There are far more good police officers than bad ones. And there are far more good black citizens than bad ones. Just like not everyone who has a last name that ends in a “Z” didn’t cross the border illegally, uses and sells drugs and is Mexican. Think people.

Burning cars in Grand Rapids and beating up a truck driver had nothing to do with the actions of something that happened in Minnesota. Yes, people have a right to be angry. But be angry at the cop; not at all cops. And if you’re white, remember Pastor Boone, Chief Craig in Detroit and John James running for senate are people we all should emulate.

Before anyone wants to attack me for not being affected let me add this: I was the American Legion commander of the post in east Detroit. There is only one other non-black active member there. I trust all my black brothers there with my life and they know I would do the same for them. Just like in the military. But I also know other forms of discrimination and have rose above it.

I also can add that any person who comes to Carleton would be treated with respect and equally by any one of our police. I don’t have to justify that statement because our officers know where village president Larry Buckingham and I stand.

Do the right thing. Remove bad cops. Respect good cops. Respect race and ethnically of ALL and we will have a stronger union.
